I wanted to call everyone’s attention to this article in the Wall Street Journal today about proposed changes in mining laws, introduced by Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM).  The new legislation would allow for royalties to be collected by the government in an attempt to raise funds to help clean up abandoned mining sites.  Mining industry representatives are concerned that royalties will increase the cost on inputs to components used for clean energy technologies, as rare-earth mineral extraction would be subject to paying royalties, and Rare-Earth Magnets are critical components in clean energy technologies, such as wind turbines.  Check it out!
