Across the globe, negative perceptions of the United States, population, and pollutants are growing at a faster rate than America can keep pace.  It is time for American policy makers to set the table in the right way and realize that America’s national security is inextricably tied to its climate change policy.

Note the reality of the world’s population growth – 97 percent of which will be in Asia, African, and Latin America over the next 40 years, according to Population Reference Bureau.  Look next to the fact that half of the population growth in the United States will be from immigration.

Combine that with the power of the Millennial generation in America – the large majority of young voters born roughly between 1978 and 2000 – which tipped the 2008 election.   Finally add two things.  First,  the Millennial generation’s focus on multilateral and cooperative foreign policy – highlighted in the New Politics Institute Report cite to Pew data showing the generation’s doubt as to whether military strength is the best way to ensure peace for the nation.  Then note the Millennials’ overwhelming belief that our country should "do whatever it take" to protect the environment.

Outcome is that policy makers today have to realign their vision to connect America’s security and climate change policy needs to change before this country no longer represents the loudest voice.  Other outcome is that the Millennials need to spend their political capital with policy makers who see clearly and show their clout to those that do not.
