Clean energy act will cut our dependence on oil

I am a veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and I support the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES). I support this legislation not because of some mushy thinking about “going green,” but because of national security. Whatever you think about climate change, the plain truth is that economic development is depleting energy resources. Competition for scarce resources will increase the political instability that anti-American extremist groups prey upon.

ACES will reduce our dependence on oil and lay the groundwork for renewable energy produced in America. It represents a step away from the oil that funds hostile regimes and extremist ideologies, and it’s a powerful tool for defusing a deep vulnerability in a complicated world. It’s good for the economy and good for the environment, but most importantly, it is critical to our national security. Inaction today will cost American lives tomorrow.
