A group of veterans toured West Virginia Sunday to talk about climate change and the threat to national security.
Operation Free made two stops, one in Morgantown, the other at the state capitol. Their message: The U.S. can no longer rely on foreign oil and other fossil fuels to power our country.
Nicholas Anderson is a veteran of the Iraq War. He served one tour of duty and says he saw first hand the absolute dependence the U.S. military has on oil. From tanks to jets, everything runs on oil-based products.
“A lot of the people fighting us in the Middle East are using money that we give them to fund terrorist activities.”
Operation Free is on a 21-state tour. Anderson stresses he’s not being paid to press the use of carbon-free energy. It’s something he’s passionate about, especially when he thinks of his fellow service members in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“There is a national security aspect to this. There are things you aren’t being told by corporate interests.”
Anderson supports new energy technology that makes oil obsolete and the air cleaner, things like hydro and wind energy. He says by using American resources, not global, it helps the economy as well.
“If we can bring that to America, not only are we using less carbon in the air but we’re also getting jobs to Americans.”
