Several armed forces veterans recently visited The Oakland Press promoting a simple message — America is too dependent upon foreign oil.

In fact, the group, representing Operation Free: Veterans for American Power, says energy independence is actually a matter of national security.

Robin Eckstein, of Appleton, Wis., says the Pentagon has acknowledged that climate change and the country’s current energy policy are threats to America. She says the group’s goal is to raise the awareness of our dependence on fossil fuels.

Another veteran, Matt Ross, of Holly, elaborated, saying much of the money we spend on fuel is going into the pockets of countries that are not friendly to the U.S.
