If anyone deserves to be heard in the global warming/climate change/energy dependency debate, it is the solider who lays his or her life on the line for our national interests.

At a recent stop in Shreveport, a group of military veterans known as Operation Free made the point abundantly clear: U.S. dependence on oil endangers soldiers’ lives. Men and women on the front lines of Iraq and Afghanistan and those supporting them have daily and harrowing cases in point that can trump any philosophical or long-term strategy discussion.

A 33-year-old woman from Appleton, Wis., talked of driving a truck hauling petroleum-based fuel from safe zones to U.S. Army camps. Though she can’t talk specifics about the violence she faced, she points out that much of it could have been prevented.
