Operation Free Leads Way as Climate Bill Gains Momentum
Veterans outreach, national security message take lead in fight for clean energy & climate legislation
WASHINGTON – The voices of over 400 veterans and national security experts have taken the lead role in advocating for clean energy and climate change legislation currently before Congress. The effort, spearheaded by the veterans and security coalition Operation Free, has been raising public awareness about the connection between climate change and national security. Recognized for their advocacy leadership by President Obama, Operation Free is changing the debate on climate and energy issues.
Operation Free was founded in July of 2009 to bring the voice of national security and veterans to the debate over climate change and energy policy. Operation Free owes much of its success to initial angel investor Eric Greenberg, whose book, GenerationWe, catalyzed what is now a multi-million dollar effort.
Since January, Operation Free’s Veterans for American Power national bus tour has taken the message to hundreds of small towns and big cities across America. Staffed by veterans from across the country, they share their personal stories about the connection between oil addiction and terrorist funding and discuss how the Department of Defense is leading the way towards a clean energy future.
Operation Free veterans have briefed President Obama, and have been hosted at the White House and Vice President’s Residence. In addition to President Obama, Operation Free’s work has been recognized by Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, and scores of Senators and Members of Congress, including climate bill sponsors, Senators John Kerry and Joe Lieberman. They have hosted speakers on Capitol Hill ranging from White House climate and energy advisory Carol Browner to former Director of Central Intelligence, R. James Woolsey.
