At the Los Angeles Auto Show, which opens this week, fuel-efficient options — from four-cylinder cars that beat 40 mpg to clean diesel, hybrid and electric models — will be everywhere. That’s because people who come to check out the latest wheels are increasingly interested in the next generation of fuel-efficient vehicles.

But if customers are so interested in going farther on a gallon of gasoline, why has the National Automobile Dealers Association been so vocal about encouraging dealers to lobby against higher fuel economy standards?

It’s strange, especially since a poll Opinion Research Corp. conducted for the Consumer Federation of America in the spring showed that 85 percent of the respondents thought boosting fuel economy to reduce oil consumption is important.

We don’t understand our fellow dealers who oppose the new mileage goals. Why would you oppose fuel economy standards that are good for your customers, good for the country and good for business?
