Maryland’s current plan is to develop an off-shore wind farm that, once built, will produce the same amount of energy as a traditional power plant. The average citizen will see an increase of 2$ on their electric bill, an increase that 55% of the state supports. This wind farm will create jobs, provide cheaper energy in the long term, and decrease air pollution. The use of renewable energy sources, such as wind, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, keep money here at home and de-fund our enemies.
Interestingly, the new wind farm in Maryland has gained wide-ranging support from a unique subest of groups. Along with traditional environmentalists, the creation of an off-shore wind farm has gained the support of steel workers, unions, healthcare workers, and faith-based organizations. For me, the most interesting supporters were the healthcare workers and the faith-based organizations, because I hadn’t thought about their specific stances on clean energy. For the healthcare workers, the benefit comes from offsetting energy production from plants that are heavy polluters, like coal-fired power plants and the effects that air pollution has on our health. The faith based organizations not only want to support healthy communities but also feel a sense of poetry in changing from energy that comes from the ground “to the day when they’ll get their energy from heaven.” New, broad coalitions, like these in Maryland, are forming across the nation to advocate for clean energy.
