To Border Security
While we should be concerned for the future of our own agriculture industry, climate change will also be causing similar damage to countries surrounding the US. For example, Mexico will suffer from increasing desertification and flooding, while the Caribbean islands will be hit by more forceful hurricanes. These populations are likely to try to find other places to live, like the US. Everyone can agree that a drastic increase in illegal immigration across our southern is not something we want to deal with.
Nine-hundred thousand people migrate annually from arid and semiarid regions of Mexico. Desertification in these areas affects 400 square miles of farmland each year. As more and more of Mexico becomes a desert because of changing weather patterns, the U.S. border will see an increase in illegal immigration, as hard working migrants attempt to enter the U.S. to make a living. By acting on climate change now, we can prevent future immigration crises that will divert our resources and negatively affect our national security.
